Media Release - R v Michael Anthony Mannah (Operation Denali)

Friday, 20 January 2023

A former NSW police officer has been jailed for accessing child abuse material following a trial by jury in the District Court.

Judge Bourke SC sentenced former NSW police officer Michael Anthony Mannah to:

  • 12 months jail with a non-parole period of 4 months, and
  • a recognizance of 2 years with conditions including a referral to a Corrective Services NSW psychologist for suitability for the sex offenders program.

In sentencing, Judge Bourke SC found that Mr Mannah had shown no contrition.

The 2 week District Court trial last year followed the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission’s Operation Denali investigation.

The sentencing comes after the former officer had his bail continued after a jury found him guilty on 30 September 2022, of using a carriage service to access child abuse material.

The Commission’s Operation Denali investigation progressed straight to prosecution. A report on Operation Denali will be tabled in Parliament in the future, according to a LECC spokesperson.
