Monitoring of Police Critical Incident at Central Station

The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) was informed of the New South Wales Police Force (NSWPF) critical incident that occurred at Central Station in Sydney’s CBD on the evening of Wednesday, 26 July 2017, and immediately made arrangements for its investigators to attend the scene.

LECC investigators commenced monitoring of the investigation by the NSWPF, which has been fully cooperating.

The LECC commenced operations on 1 July 2017 and, amongst its other functions of police oversight, is to monitor the conduct of a critical incident investigation if it decides that it is in the public interest to do so.

This critical incident investigation by the NSWPF will be monitored by the LECC to provide assurance to the public and the next of kin that the police investigation is conducted in a competent, thorough and objective manner.

If the LECC forms the view that the investigation is not being conducted in an appropriate manner, it can advise the NSWPF and/or the Coroner of those concerns and make recommendations in relation to the concerns identified.

The NSWPF is required to consider and respond to concerns and recommendations raised by the LECC. The LECC may make the advice it has given public after the conclusion of the critical incident investigation.
