What is the LECC investigating?
Following the receipt of a significant number of complaints, the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission has decided that it is in the public interest to investigate the police operation at Sydney Town Hall and surrounds on the evening of Monday 9 February 2026, including incidents of alleged misconduct on the part of NSW police officers against persons attending that location for a protest.

24 May 2026
The Commission has been reviewing hundreds of hours of CCTV and body worn footage and begins witness interviews in Operation Makalu. The Commission has also confirmed that it will hold some public examinations which will start no earlier than September 2026.

The Hon Peter Johnson SC, Chief Commissioner, has appointed Kirsten Edwards SC and Emma Sullivan of counsel as Counsel Assisting the Commission.
The Commission expects to conduct some public hearings as part of the investigation in the second half of 2026. The public will be advised of the hearing dates when they are finalised.

Since the commencement of Operation Makalu, the Commission has received a significant volume of correspondence about the matter. Our Intake and Assessment teams are working hard to process all correspondence as soon as practicable. Due to the volume received, this will take some time. Once assessed, the Commission will write to each correspondent with an update. We thank you for your patience, understanding and for your continued contribution in the important work we do in independently overseeing the Police in NSW.

The Commission’s investigation in Operation Makalu has only recently commenced and it is expected that some time will be required to receive and assess a very substantial volume of material from the public and the NSW Police Force. On 17 February 2026 the Commission issued a media release inviting members of the public to provide information to assist the investigation by uploading that information to a dedicated link here.
