Critical Incident Media Alert - Monitoring of Critical Incident at Zetland
15 November 2025
On 15 November 2025, a critical incident was declared by the NSW Police Force (NSWPF) at Zetland. The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) was notified of the critical incident by the NSWPF. The NSWPF are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
The LECC is independently monitoring the police investigation of the critical incident under Part 8 of the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission Act 2016 (LECC Act) to ensure public confidence in that investigation.
Until the NSWPF critical incident investigation has concluded, the legislation states that the LECC can only monitor the NSWPF investigation. It cannot independently investigate the conduct of police itself: s 44(9) LECC Act. Where someone has died, or been seriously injured, a critical incident investigation will be finalised after any coronial and/or criminal proceedings have finished.
For critical incidents involving a death, the NSWPF will prepare a report for the coroner, and a mandatory inquest will ordinarily be held.
Further information about the LECC’s role in monitoring critical incident investigations can be found at https://www.lecc.nsw.gov.au/ under the heading ‘What is a critical incident’, and in our data hub at https://www.lecc.nsw.gov.au/data-hub.
