Media Statement - Progress of Commission investigation in Operation Makalu concerning police operation at Sydney Town Hall protest on 9 February 2026

The Commission’s investigation in Operation Makalu has only recently commenced and it is expected that some time will be required to receive and assess a very substantial volume of material from the public and the NSW Police Force. On 17 February 2026 the Commission issued a media release inviting members of the public to provide information to assist the investigation by uploading that information to a dedicated link on the Commission website.
The timing and progress of the investigation, including the timing of hearings, will depend upon assessment of the material to be obtained in the present phase of the investigation. It is anticipated that at least some of those hearings will be held in public.
The Commission will take steps to inform the public of any scheduled action, including any public hearings to be held, as the investigation progresses.
