Media Release - Operation Makalu – Appointment of Counsel Assisting the Commission

The Commission’s investigation into the Police Operation at the Sydney Town Hall Protest on 9 February 2026 continues.
The Hon Peter Johnson SC, Chief Commissioner, has appointed Kirsten Edwards SC and Emma Sullivan of counsel as Counsel Assisting the Commission.
The Commission expects to conduct some public hearings as part of the investigation in the second half of 2026. The public will be advised of the hearing dates when they are finalised.
The Commission has received a significant volume of material since the commencement of Operation Makalu. It is still possible to provide the Commission with new information or footage using the Commission’s dedicated QR code on its website.
The Commission’s Intake and Assessment teams are working hard to process all correspondence received so far. Due to the volume received, this will take some time. Once assessed, the Commission will write to each correspondent with an update.
Commission investigators have been working to obtain and secure evidence, including hundreds of hours of CCTV footage.
The Commission acknowledges the patience of the public as it continues this important work.
