Public Hearing - Incident at Byron Bay

The Commission is to hold a public hearing commencing on Monday 26th March 2018. In order to maintain the integrity of the Commission’s public examinations (often referred to as hearings), filming and recording is not permitted in the hearing room or on Commission premises. As such, mobile telephones or other recording devices will not be allowed in the hearing room. Any member of the public who fails to comply with this request may be excluded from an examination.

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE

INCIDENT AT BYRON BAY ON 11 JANUARY 2018  

The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (“the Commission”) is an independent statutory body. The principal functions of the Commission are to detect, investigate and expose serious misconduct and serious maladministration within the NSW Police Force. 

The Commission is to hold a public hearing commencing on Monday 26 March 2018 at 10.00am at the Commission’s hearing room, Level 3, 111 Elizabeth Street, Sydney. 

The general scope and purpose of the hearing will be:

To investigate whether any NSWPF officer involved in the apprehension, detention or treatment of a 16-year-old male at Byron Bay in the early hours of 11 January 2018 engaged in serious misconduct.

The Commission is separate from and completely independent of the NSW Police Force. The Commission will treat all information confidentially and has powers to protect persons who provide information to it. 

Those persons who seek to appear or be legally represented at the abovementioned hearing should attend the Commission for the purpose of making an application at 10.00 am on Monday 26 March 2018.
